How it works

A note on timing

Families often say; ‘we’re so glad we did this when we did’.

If the thought has crossed your mind, it’s usually for a reason.

How it works

1

An Initial Conversation

It starts with a home or video call, in which we talk about:

  • Who the film is for
  • Why you’re thinking about doing this now
  • Any concerns or sensitivities
  • What you’d like the finished film to feel like

There’s no sales script and no rush. This is about making sure the approach feels comfortable for everyone involved.

2

Preparing for the interview

Before filming, I’ll plan the conversation around the person’s life.

I’ll send over a list of questions around themes, such as early memories, growing up and milestones, and they can tick those that they feel comfortable talking about.

They don’t need to rehearse or prepare notes – in fact it’s usually better if they don’t. The aim isn’t to perform, its to talk naturally.

3

The filming day

Filming usually takes place at home, in a familiar and relaxed setting.

The conversation typically lasts around 2 to 3 hours, with breaks whenever needed. There’s no pressure to ‘get through everything’.

I guide the conversation gently – listening, prompting when helpful and allowing space when something important comes up. Most people forget the camera is there sooner than they expect!

4

Editing the film

After filming, I careful shape the conversation into a clear, watchable film. This includes:

  • Removing repetition and distractions
  • Organising the stories into chapters
  • Integrating selected photographs (if you like)
  • Keeping the tone natural and true to the person

I include one structured round of refinements to ensure the film feels right

    5

    Review and refinements

You’ll have the chance to watch the film and suggest and small refinements

    This might be:

    • Adjusting chapter breaks
    • Removing anything you’d rather keep private
    • Minor pacing changes

I include one structured round of refinements to ensure the film feels right.

    6

    Delivery

The finished film is delivered digitally, ready to share with family wherever they are.

Many people choose to add a presentation USB, especially when the film is a gift.

Either way, it’s something your family will keep -and return to – for years to come.
